Dog hailed a hero for staying with missing child until rescuers arrived

Authorities in Blount County say an endangered child missing since Monday night has been found safe along with his dog, which is being described as a hero.

Deputies say Kaydon Leach, 6, was found about a half mile from his home. He was found lying down with his dog, a small black and white terrier. The dog is being hailed a hero by officials.

Crews had been conducting a full-scale search in a remote part of the county the boy. He had last been seen on Monday night in the area of South Hummingbird Drive in Tallahassee, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The boy was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital to be checked out, and was discharged Thursday in good health.

Leach’s family said the child and the dog cuddled, keeping each other warm throughout the night during the heavy rain. When the sun came up, the six-year-old said he was trying to find his way back home.

Blount County Sheriff’s Office conducted a large-scale search operation with multiple agencies. The search was coordinated by the Blount Special Operations Team and included the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, search parties, K-9 teams, members of the BCSO SWAT Team as well as Black Hawk military helicopter.
