Maloney should propose bills to protect human life

U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-Cold Spring, has introduced several pieces of legislation to prevent the mistreatment of animals. HR (House Rule) 1847, for example, would ban the application of chemicals or sharp impediments to the feet of horses in order to force them into a high-stepping gate and HR 2790 would prohibit testing cosmetic chemicals on animals. Then there is HR 1406 that would forbid the sale of cat and dog meat for human consumption.

All are laudable steps to a kinder, more compassionate society achieved by the subordination of the right to choose to the welfare of animals. But then, sad to say, the compassion seems to run out.

The congressman has introduced no legislation to prevent the dismemberment by suction of new human life in the womb. No HR to stop their scalding to death with saline solutions. No HR shielding them from piercing to death by the abortionist’s knife and scissor. Here the right to choose  is unleashed on new and innocent human life and although studies including a recent Marist poll show that more than 60 percent of Independents and Republicans favor a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy with the exception when the mother’s life is at stake

Only seven of the more than 150 nations in the world, North Korea and China are two of them, allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Unfortunately, our country is one of the seven.

In the name of decency and democracy, isn’t it time that our country show the same level of humanity for the child in the womb as most of the world now does and for Congressman Maloney to reconnect with the American people in extending some of the kindnesses and protections he offers animals to new human life?
